Melissa virus turns 10
A decade ago there was no Facebook, no iPhone, and no Conficker. There was dial-up and AOL and a nasty virus called Melissa that ended up being the fastest spreading virus at the time. A talked to Dmitry Graznov, a senior research architect at McAfee Avert Labs who was among the researchers who worked to fight the Melissa outbreak and track down the creator.
- How was Melissa discovered? Graznov: Avert as a whole discovered it as did some of the competitors. It was submitted to us by customers as it started to spread around the world (on March 26, 1999).
- What made Melissa different from previous viruses? Graznov: It was the first mass-mailing virus, which used e-mail to spread on a large scale.
- What harm did the virus do? Graznov: In some cases the load on the e-mail servers in some organizations was so high that the servers were effectively shut down.
- How many computers were affected and what did the virus do? Graznov: Hundreds of thousands of computers were affected. That's a guess...Melissa infected other documents a user opened in Microsoft Word. It also connected to Outlook if it was running and selected 50 entries in the address book and e-mailed an infected document to those addresses...including mailing lists...As a result, the virus was sent not just to 50 people, but to thousands of people easily. We didn't have any firm numbers to go by, but we did have reports from customers saying their Exchange servers were overwhelmed.
- What was the motivation behind Melissa? Graznov: There was no material gain. Back then, people didn't do it for money. They did it for mischief, for fame...Today there is huge money in computer crime...Back then, we had 200 times fewer pieces of malware than we have today.
- Any comments on Conficker and Melissa and how far we've come? Graznov: Conficker is a completely different type of thing. It's not a macro virus. It's an executable and a botnet, and it downloads lots of stuff on your computer. It's basically a network for sale. It can be rented out. It can be used for password stealing. Back in 1999 there wasn't such a thing as a business model for malware...Today, big money is involved in computer malware. You cannot even compare them.

Can Earth Hour Galvanize the Global Worming Fight?
- That hasn't stopped environmental groups from trying, however. On Saturday at 8:30 pm local time — beginning on Chatham Island in New Zealand, one of the first places on Earth that the dawn strikes — towns and cities in over 80 countries across the world will shut off their lights for 60 minutes, to draw attention to climate change. The National Stadium in Beijing, the Great Pyramids in Egypt, the Empire State Building in New York and even the Strip in Las Vegas — all will go dark for an hour to raise awareness of climate change and show that there is a worldwide constituency out there eager for action.
- This is the second year in a row that WWF has helped run a worldwide Earth Hour — the event began two years ago just in Australia) -- and participation has grown tremendously, from 400 cities in 2008 to some 4,000 this year. The image, at least, will be spectacular — monuments and skyscrapers switching off, a ring of darkness passing across the face of the planet.
- Earth Hour itself is easy to make fun of — skeptics will say that turning out the lights won't make but a light ding in our carbon emissions, and critics will claim it proves that environmentalists really do want to send us straight to the dark ages. The Competitive Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank, is holding a counter-protest during the same time period called Celebrate Human Achievement Hour, which will "salute the people who keep the lights on and produce the energy that helps make human achievement possible."
- Global warming may never get its perfect picture — Earth Hour, a globe gone dark, may be the closest thing we'll have.

lets vote EARTH tonight!!
- Earth Hour is a sort of open-source movement against global warming. On Saturday, March 28, at 8:30 p.m. in each time zone, millions of people in thousands of cities are expected to turn off the lights for one hour to raise people's consciousness about the link between global warming and energy use. Started in Australia two years ago, the event is mushrooming thanks in part to the Internet and social media.
- One day before the start of the event in Asia, "Earth Hour" is the top search item on Twitter. A 30-second clip about Earth Hour on You Tube has gotten almost 59,000 views. Facebook groups count hundreds of thousands of members. The goal for this year is to get 1 billion people to turn their lights off for an hour. In 2007, 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for an hour and in 2008, it went to 50 million.
- But it's not just individuals: dozens of cities and 829 world landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower and the Great Pyramids of Giza, will be dark for one hour as well.
- The whole point of Earth Hour is to cast a vote and make a visible statement by turning off the lights for an hour. But it's worth pointing out that that a few watts will be saved along the way and that people waste a lot of energy in their daily lives.
- This week, a published study calculated that $2.8 billion is wasted from office PCs that aren't shut off properly. Perhaps people who participate in Earth Hour could unplug their home electronics as well.
Tools for the Gmail addict!!!
- gBooks: If your browser's bookmarks folder doesn't do enough for you, this clever tool turns your Gmail account into a bookmarks server. It makes your bookmarks available to you any time you log in to your Gmail account from anywhere.
- gCount: If you don't feel like firing up a browser to check your Gmail account, use gCount. Running on Mac OS X, the lightweight app sits in your Dock and gives you real-time updates on how many e-mails you have in your in-box
- Gmail Loader: Gmail now makes it easy to import e-mails to your account, but one solution for Windows or Linux PCs works just as well. This software reads the e-mails in your current e-mail program (most of the well-known services are supported) and automatically forwards them to your Gmail account. E-mails can be sent to either the in-box folder or sent items folder.
- Better Gmail 2: Better Gmail 2 combines a variety of Greasemonkey user scripts to enhance the functionality of the e-mail service. The software provides users with the option to use attachment icons and macros, place the in-box count first, and force an encrypted connection. It basically combines the best of Gmail Labs add-ons and puts them into one package for you.
- GTDInbox: With the help of GTDInbox, you can improve your use of Gmail. The add-on turns e-mails into tasks, giving them a priority and allowing them to be viewed by project, context, or person. It also offers a popup command box that lets you preview, archive, or delete messages in just a few clicks. It streamlines many of Gmail's most-used features and works well. Try it out.

5 Tips To Good Web Site Design
- Title - Make the title dazzling. A Web site title like "John's Web Site" is not very catchy. Without a title for your Web site that catches their eye they won't click on it. If your readers find a link to your Web site on search engines, or other lists, they probably won't click on it. Use a thesaurus to help you find unique, intriguing words to use in your Web site title.
- Columns - How many columns you use in your Web pages changes your whole Web site. Usually when someone creates their first Web page their Web site design is something simple and pretty plain. A lot of people like to use two column Web pages for their Web site design so they can have their writing on one side of the Web page and their navigation on the other. This Web site design looks much better than the plain Web page and it makes your Web site easier to navigate. Then there's the 3 column Web page. This Web site design is not better or worse than the 2 column Web page. It's used if you have a lot of navigation or if you want an extra column for special writings or links on your Web pages
- Colors - Colors are very important in Web site design when it comes to looks and having people read your Web site. If your Web site design colors are boring, people will think your Web site is boring. If you use colors on your Web site that make your Web site's readers feel at home or like they're at their favorite restaurant, you will have readers that feel like they're going to find something they like.
- Navigation - An important rule to follow in Web site design is that every Web page on your Web site should link back to your homepage. If you want to keep people on your Web site then you need to provide them with a way back to the beginning so they don't get lost and move on to another Web site.
- Content - Content is one of the most important thing when it comes to Web site design. If you don't provide good, valuable content on your Web site then no one will have a reason for visiting your Web site, not to mention read it. Your homepage should have information on it telling people about your Web site and why they should read it. Use this Web page to convince them that your Web site is worthwhile.

Friendster launches new mobile site
Friendster launches new mobile site
As if it wasn’t hard enough already to avoid all your Friendsters lately and live a sedentary life just like the way we all used to, Friendster is adding yet another clever way for you to access your account directly from your mobile phone. It’s their first official mobile site, unsurprisingly called Friendster Mobile. You’d think this is probably because of all the buzz in mobile Internet usage recently, no?
You can access Friendster Mobile by going to m.friendster.com on your mobile phone, and here you will be able to connect with all 3 of your friends plus the 70 million other Friendster users who are, if you haven’t noticed it yet, complete strangers.
But you know what they say, strangers are just friends waiting to happen. I can’t believe I just wrote that, but I do know that Friendster will be adding support for multiple languages in its new mobile site, first Indonesian, and then others in the weeks to come.
So if you’ve nothing to do and are in the mood for some mindless surfing (with friends, of course), head on over to m.friendster.com.

'Controlled cloud' the way to go for security
Enterprise security will increasingly move to include a cloud component but in-the-cloud protection cannot be the only means of defense, according to security vendor Sophos.
Paul Ducklin, head of technology for the Asia-Pacific region at Sophos, told ZDNet Asia in a phone interview that the cloud "is something that will improve existing mechanisms for protection" as it can block access to harmful Web sites or retrieve updates in real time.
But, relying on a service in the cloud is not something that enterprises and individuals can afford to do. "The cloud isn't always there, no matter how incredibly connected you are," he pointed out, adding that there will be times when PCs are not connected due to flights, train rides or simply because there isn't a need to log on to the Internet.
"During those times you [still] want protection to continue--you want that protection to continue when someone plugs their USB drive or mobile phone into your computer so you can look at photographs and maybe pick up something along the way," said Sydney-based Ducklin. For instance, the Conficker worm used the USB drive as its primary attack vector, he noted.
In addition, users need to be protected when downloading content from the Internet that might be encrypted, where an external party is "not able to scan inside it by design".

Human Resource Information Systems
Applications of HRISNew Technology
With the changing world and constant new technology that is available, managers need to be aware of the technology that will increase effectiveness in their company. Human resource information systems (HRIS) have increasingly transformed since it was first introduced at General Electric in the 1950s. HRIS has gone from a basic process to convert manual information keeping systems into computerized systems, to the HRIS systems that are used today. Human resource professionals began to see the possibility of new applications for the computer. The idea was to integrate many of the different human resource functions. The result was the third generation of the computerized HRIS, a feature-rich, broad-based, self-contained HRIS. The third generation took systems far beyond being mere data repositories and created tools with which human resource professionals could do much more (Byars, 2004).
Many companies have seen a need to transform the way Human Resource operations are performed in order to keep up with new technology and increasing numbers of employees. Terasen Pipelines moved its headquarters from Vancouver to Calgary to be closer to the oil and realized a major growth in employees. In the past recording keeping was done on paper and with spreadsheets. Mangers at Terasen realized that there was a need to change to a more computerized system and looked into different HRIS vendors. By making the move to a HRIS system, Terasen is able to keep more accurate records as well as better prepare for future growth. Another company that saw the benefits of keeping up with new technology is WORKSource Inc. To meet the challenge of handling 100 new employees, WORKSource Inc. acquired Web-based technology programs from GHG Corp. like electronic pay stub, electronic timesheet software, time-off system, and human resource information system (“Tips,” 2006). By adapting these new programs, WORKSource was able to reduce waste and cost.
The Internet is an increasingly popular way to recruit applicants, research technologies and perform other essential functions in business. Delivering human resource services online (eHR) supports more efficient collection, storage, distribution, and exchange of data (Friesen, 2003). An intranet is a type of network used by companies to share information to people within the organization. An intranet connects people to people and people to information and knowledge within the organization; it serves as an “information hub” for the entire organization. Most organizations set up intranets primarily for employees, but they can extend to business partners and even customers with appropriate security clearance (Byars & Rue, 2004).

Financial and technology issues make Obama's EHR push not so easy to execute.
So what about the Obama plan would change the equation? It's designed to tackle one of the two biggest barriers: the financial penalty that has existed so far for adoption. But it does little to solve the technology issues that will hinder large-scale deployment.

Google Gives And Takes Away - Why it's hard to find useful information on the popular search engine
This became evident to me recently when I tried to find the phone number of a doctor. That's the sort of task for which Google
But instead of getting the simple vanilla address and phone number I was looking for, my screen results were crowded with Web businesses of dubious utility, offering to help me, say, read reviews of the sought-after doctor written by people I didn't know and had no particular reason to trust.
The doctor's phone would sometimes be listed and sometimes not. In the latter case, you might even be asked to click through to a Web site and register.
There is a way around this: Simply type in, say, "Dr. Marcus Welby Santa Monica." You'd straightaway get a spot-on, Google-created listing of his address and phone number, accompanied by a map of his office and a link to directions on getting there.
Granted, that's not much of a trick to have to remember. But if you aren't aware of the exact words you need to use in the search and instead type "Marcus Welby family medicine Santa Monica," chances are good you'll be dumped into a tar pit of junky, useless Web sites.
It's much the same for finding other kinds of information, and it's a reminder of the way Google giveth and taketh away at the same time.
One part of Google is busy creating indexes of online information while at the same time filtering out "spam," which in this context means Web sites whose only function is to make money off the fact you land on them, without providing any sort of "value-added" information in the process.
Another part of Google, though, creates the programs that pay Web developers to put ads on their sites, thus creating the incentive to make pointless Web pages in the first place.
The company isn't unaware of these issues and is constantly tinkering with its internal software that rates Web sites to eliminate the tricks that less-useful sites can use to artificially increase their rankings and get in your face in the first place.
A few years back, the home repair field was blighted with these sorts of "Potemkin Web sites," which exist only to collect click-based ad revenue without providing anything useful in return. Google made some internal adjustments and many of the sites disappeared from the top of search results.
This sort of eternal vigilance is the price that needs to be paid for a utilitarian Web. Since Google is both the cause and solution to the problem of spammy Web data, users have little choice but to hope it continues to have the resources and inclination to stay one step ahead of that which it set in motion.
